Frequently Asked Questions

Southeast Qld Flooring Specialists

What is polished concrete?

Polished concrete is produced by grinding the concrete surface with diamonds to reveal or expose the aggregate within the slab (new or existing slab). Further grinding with progressively finer diamonds produces a polished finish. The concrete is then sealed with either a topical sealer or a penetrating sealer depending on the type of finish you want.

What is the difference between polished concrete and honed concrete?

Honed concrete is usually finished with a penetrating sealer giving the concrete a more natural look. Polished concrete is finished with a topical sealer that can be either a satin or a gloss finish depending on the look you want to achieve.

Can I have coloured concrete and/or coloured aggregates?

When you lay a new slab there is a wide range of coloured concretes and coloured aggregates available for you to chose from. These are selected through your builder and/or concrete supplier.

Does polished concrete meet slip standards?

If the right application is applied both internally and/or externally then yes polished concrete will meet the Australia/New Zealand Slip Standard. (Please bear in mind that any floor finish may become slippery if it becomes wet.)

How soon can I use my polished concrete floor after it has been installed?

Your floor will be hard enough for foot traffic after 48 hours.

Does the polished concrete process produce a lot of dust?

No. Southeast Floors have 3 phase grinders and vacuums that remove all the dust into plastic bags.

Are sealers UV Stable?

Yes. The topical and penetrating sealers used by Southeast Floors are UV Stable.

Can you polish an existing concrete floor?

Typically yes we can polish an existing concrete floor. The concrete would have to be in very poor condition not to be able to achieve a polished concrete finish.

Can you colour match to an existing slab?

Generally an existing slab can be matched as close as possible. Colour matching can be achieved by staining the concrete once the grinding process has been completed. Please bear in mind though that the colour will be altered when the topical sealer is put on.

How much does polished concrete cost?

This depends on what finish you want on your polished concrete floor. Price varies depending on whether you have a 60 grit, 120 grit or a full Hiperfloor Polished Concrete finish.

Does the concrete need to be handled in a certain way before polishing?
